Be careful who you tell about your
infestation situation. Be ready for all
types of reactions and try not to take it personal. Just realize that people are scared of these
tiny creatures with good reason. Not
everyone will be able to cope.
I told
everyone coming into my home, as a courtesy, that I had bed bugs, or you can just
say no to any visitors. I limited the
amount of visitation while I was in a serious war with these bugs, and when the
probability of transmission was probably high.
You don’t have to explain yourself or tell anyone if you feel
uncomfortable. But if you allow
visitors, then I feel they have a right to know. It was difficult to find the words sometimes
to tell people, but it is a courtesy I would want someone to extend to me
before inviting me over. Don’t wait
until they are at the door, be upfront.
You have nothing to be ashamed of.
You have to keep the shame in check in your own mind because you will
encounter ignorance even from people you thought would know better. Keep your head up and keep pushing forward in
spite of limited support.
There is so much to know about these
insects. Don’t ever stop learning. I heard of them yes, but didn’t know what
they looked like in circulation or had any concern at all that they may one day
enter my world.
Even if you decide to
hire an exterminator you might incur them again. Maybe you are inviting them by not knowing
simple things that keep them at bay, or to eradicate them quickly. Hopefully my sharing has helped you in that
regard.
Remember you can get them from utilizing
public transportation, from airplanes to the city bus. You can be exposed in thrift stores, even
regular stores that sell new merchandise, or anywhere there are people. It helps to know something about these bugs
so you’re not living in fear buying into all the hysteria.
Remember a bed bug is only a bug and can be
dealt with. The important thing is to identify early and
take action whether it be do it yourself or calling in an exterminator. However, I am of the opinion that this
situation is too important to pass on to someone else 100%. You in my opinion should be on the front line
in your war against these bugs whether you elect to DIY or in hiring the right
exterminator for your specific needs. There
is no one size fits all.
